Absence Makes the Heart Grow Fonder

By God's grace, Matthew and I are about to celebrate four years of marriage.  We are still funny when we are apart.  By "funny" I mean we have awkward phone conversations yet still don't want to say "good-bye" when the "conversation" was over 20 minutes ago...

I hate being away from him.  It doesn't matter where we were, who else we were with, as wonderful as that all may have been, it still stinks to be apart.  It is not fun.  The feeling is mutual.  But I will just speak for myself in this post.  Anywhere is not as great if he's not there and everywhere is better when he is near me.

HOWEVER, being apart does make me appreciate and value my dear husband all the more when we are reunited.

I was hoping to experience that wonderful reuniting on Wednesday, June 19th when Elli and I returned on the train, but I had a bad attitude about something stupid (Matt not doing something my way probably...).  So I got us off on the wrong foot.  Normally little things like that get forgotten or talked about and are quickly repented of and forgiven, but alas we got in a car accident not moments after we got in the car and drove out of the train station parking lot.  Everyone was ok, but my bad attitude set the tone for how the afternoon went.  Sadly, it wasn't great and we didn't get to really talk things through until much, much later in the day.

It got me thinking though, what if everyone hadn't been "ok" in the accident?  What if one of us was seriously injured?  Or worse...?  I let my pride (things not being done my way or whatever--> it was so insignificant we can't remember what it was!) get in the way of what should have been a joyful reuniting.  If the accident was more severe that could have been the last conversation we ever had together.  How terrible.

I am so thankful for God's grace in giving me an opportunity to repent of my sin and reconcile with my husband, but God didn't "owe" me that.  Everything could have been awful, but instead it was actually quite painless.  We walked across the street from where the accident happened to an Enterprise and we were in a rental car headed down the road in less than an hour (grace!). What placement for the accident to have happened!  Also, Enterprise was out of cars or they were all reserved, I still don't even know how we got one (grace!).  The guy admitted that it was his fault for backing into us when he could have tried to say that we rear-ended him and easily put it on us and our insurance (grace!). So much grace!  Thank You Lord!

James 4:13-17:

13 Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go into such and such a town and spend a year there and trade and make a profit”— 14 yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes. 15 Instead you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that.” 16 As it is, you boast in your arrogance. All such boasting is evil. 17 So whoever knows the right thing to do and fails to do it, for him it is sin.

Let's not put off good things that we should do or neglect repenting of sin/reconciling with others another moment.  Our time here is so limited.  The Psalmist reminds us of this over and over again.
Ps. 90:12 is a great one:
"So teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom."
What a great prayer to pray and mind set to have!  Please Lord cultivate this in me!

God's grace was shown to me over and over again on Wednesday.  What a marvelous ending to the day when my husband held me in his arms and told me he forgave me and he loves me.

Then on Thursday we were blessed to go on a hike together and eat dinner out in the backyard as a family.  There was a quiet moment at the dinner table when Matthew looked at me and tears began to well up in his eyes, he smiled and I smiled back.
"You're so beautiful" he said.
No make up, sweaty from the hike, hair a red frizzled mess, t-shirt... Following Christ's example, Matthew looks beyond my exterior condition, even beyond my ugly, sinful mess-ups from the day before and he sees what I can be and what I will become, by God's grace.

Sixth Month

  Watch Elli Grow!

April 1st-April 30th

Honestly, I have been working on this blog for so long that I am not proofing it, I'm just posting it so I can move on to 7 and 8 :) So I apologize for anything that is out of place, misspelled, etc :)

Just a note on her measurements... She is a very small little girl.  She only gained 3.5oz over the last month.  She also is a very busy girl=fast metabolism like her Momma and Daddy.  We were a bit worried for a week or so but she seems to be doing great! Healthy, active, alert! We are thankful to the Lord!
Weight: 12lbs 7oz
Height: 25.25
Head Circumference: 39.5
Sleeping Patterns: Oh Man! This 6th month has been super intense! Naps are rough.  She is taking very short ones or none at all.  It got a little better towards the end of April when we started keeping her up longer in between naps.  Still sleeping well at night! Bedtime is 8:30pm. This whole napping thing cause us to rely on the Lord to be our strength! It was so difficult to get anything done because she wanted us to be with her if she was awake and she was barely sleeping any during the day. Thank Jesus for His grace on us and for encouraging family and friends! Also, for my sweet husband to gave me time to do things almost every day even though he had a ton of school to do!
Eating Habits: She still nurses 5 times a day, but now she also "eats" at breakfast and lunch!
New "Foods": She has had a few sips of water:) She really just likes to hold whatever the water is in, glass, cup, water bottle! Egg Yokes (4.10), Avocado (4.16), and Butter (4.29)
New discoveries: Elli has found her feet (4.13.13) and started sucking her thumb the week of April 21st.  She also started taking a pacifier 4.27! Crazy child. She wouldn't have anything to do with them until then.  Well besides chewing on them.
New accomplishments: She reached for me 4.20 (but hasn't really done it since). First sort of solid poopy diaper (4.20). I know you were dying to know that! "Sitting" with little to no assistance for several seconds, with help for several minutes.  She leans her head back when she no longer likes the situation that she is in.  Elli started with a little separation anxiety the week of April 21st. She is much more aware of the world around her.  She knows what is going on most of the time!
Special Memories:
April 2nd-6th: Nana, Pa, Uncle Dustin, Aunt Amy, Michelle, Aileen, and Barbie came to visit for Spring Break! We went to the Museum of Natural Science in Durham, visited the Capital of NC, went in the Museum of History, went out to dinner, and visited with the Cabes! It was a very fun visit! We are so thankful they could come! Thank you all for making the drive and spending your break with us! We are so grateful that Elli had that time to bond with each of you!
April 13th-14th: Visited Aunt Bethany, Papa, & Grammi at Liberty. We went to see the show Tarzan and met Bethany's boyfriend Logan! We also got to spend a little bit of time hanging out with Bethany Joy and Catherine outside the hotel on a blanket on the mulch, eating Chick-Fil-A and contemplating life. Fun times!
April 14th-20th: Grammi came and stayed with us! We had so much fun! Grammi came to preschool one day and she and Elli spent a lot of great bonding time together! Mom took me shopping for some clothes that fit:) She watched Elli so we could go out on a much needed date night! The trip ended with a bang when the power went out while we were cooking burgers on the stove.  It was a nasty storm.  We ended up going out to eat at the Fire Pit! Love that place! Love my Momma, Elli's Grammi even more! Such a sweet time! Thank you Mom for coming and Daddy for sharing her for that long!
Nickname: "Mousy"-Because of the noises she makes before I nurse her when she is super hungry!

 PICTURES!

Eating Time!

The first thing Elli ate was EGG YOKE (soft boiled)! I know most of you think we are crazy, if you didn't already, but egg yoke is a great first food for babies.  A lot of cultures have started there/continue to feed their babies egg yoke first.

My Papaw's bowl and a silver spoon my Mamaw gave to Elli before she was born.

Before we began...

yum yum

So she wasn't that into it the first several times... we had to learn how to cook it just right and she had to get used to having the new texture in her mouth!

Daddy used one of her teething toys to try to get her to eat some

She didn't like that "trick"

The yoke... we did eventually buy some plastic baby spoons but for the first couple of weeks this is what we used!

Oh and we also used our fingers, well mostly used our fingers

Eating in my lap

Still not crazy about it! haha

We love spending time outside and this is a fun way to do it!

Super Daddy! Rocking the Moby Wrap so we can both get some stuff done! This was during Elli's "I will cry when you walk out of my sight stage." That was a tough one! She still does occasionally, but not every single time!

Back in Wake Forest

Dad brought Mom back to our house for the week! He spent Sunday night with us then headed of to work Monday morning! I am so thankful for the short but sweet time with him and that he was willing to share Momma with me for the week! He is such a hard worker and such a wonderful husband, Daddy, & Papa!
